Opal Food & Body Wisdom: Exercise & Sport Program
Seattle, Washington
Levels of care: PHP, IOP, & outpatient Developed by Opal Co-Founder and athlete Kara Bazzi, LMFT, CEDS, Opal’s Exercise + Sport Program has been specifically designed to help clients explore their relationship to exercise, sport, and movement in the context of eating disorder treatment. The overall goal of the Exercise + Sport Program is to target the qualitative aspects (mindset) of client’s relationship to exercise and sport that are connected to the disorder and rooted: namely affect regulation, OCD, perfectionism and rigidity and the way exercise is used as a compensation for food or for body shaping/weight manipulation. Clients will have the opportunity and support in inhabiting their bodies and minds in new ways, based on each client’s own body wisdom, values, and unique appetite for movement. Regardless of sport/ exercise background, we hope for clients to leave Opal with the tools necessary to nourish and care for their bodies using movement, exercise and sport as a part of their healing journey.

Walden GOALS Program

Levels of care: Virtual IOP Providing Intensive Outpatient Eating Disorder Treatment for Athletes Athletes are two to three times more likely than the average person to develop an eating disorder. Those impacted by disordered eating or nutritional deficiencies will be less competitive in sport, more prone to injury, and risk permanent physical damage that, in some cases, can be life-threatening. Walden’s GOALS Intensive Outpatient Eating Disorder Treatment Program is built specifically for adult athletes (18+) who need guidance on how best to optimize the balance between nutritional needs and performance goals.
Treatment Facility
McCallum Place:
The Victory Program
St. Louis, MO
Levels of care: Residential, PHP, IOP At The Victory Program at McCallum Place, we are as passionate about your health as you are about your sport. The Victory Program provides eating disorder treatment to help athletes overcome eating disorders while significantly improving physical and psychological health for maximum performance and emotional well-being. We know that sport performance is of paramount importance to serious athletes. For that reason, the athlete’s performance is not avoided or forgotten in treatment; rather, it is interwoven into eating disorder treatment. We do not believe that the athlete’s health and treatment should ever be subordinated to sport. At the same time, we do not believe that performance has to be ignored in effective treatment. In fact, it can be an important part of eating disorder treatment that can be used to motivate the athlete-patient. Victory Program staff members are not only aware of the psychological issues related to enhanced sport performance, they are equipped to assist program athlete-patients in learning and using such strategies and techniques to enhance sport performance. The fact that this type of skills training is included in treatment is simply another example of how the Victory Program is different from traditional eating disorder treatment programs. Thus, when returning to competition, the individual is not only healthier physically and psychologically, but is better equipped to perform.
Treatment Facility
Walker Wellness Clinic
Dallas, TX
Levels of care: IOP and outpatient An athlete struggling with an eating disorder is complex and can become life-threatening if left untreated. Identifying the type of eating disorder is essential to get the right help. How do you know if you are an athlete who has a formal eating disorder and use your sport or exercise regimen as a compensatory behavior that it has become an addiction? This is one of the most challenging diagnoses and it is often misdiagnosed because it requires a team of healthcare professionals. Walker Wellness Clinic at Cooper Aerobic Center is the only eating disorder treatment center that includes (on staff) exercise physiologists, sport coaches and sport dietitians: Clinicians who have been elite athletes themselves, and who understand eating disorders, body physiology, the complexity of the demands of training, and the role of nutrition. Combined with individual and group psychotherapy, physiological and psychological assessments and Cooper Aerobic Center’s world class training facilities, Walker Wellness is well equipped to treat the complexities of most athletes who struggle with eating disorders.
