What is a recovery coach?
An eating disorder recovery coach is a individual who provides guidance, support, and accountability for individuals working to overcome an eating disorder. Unlike therapists, who typically focus on in-depth psychological treatment, recovery coaches work on more practical, day-to-day support and focus on helping clients implement strategies and develop skills that will sustain their recovery.
Recovery coaches often provide services such as:
-
Meal support
-
Text support throughout the week
-
Regular check in's and weekly one-on-one sessions
-
Assistance with reaching recovery goals

God’s journey for me has taken me down many paths that I was not expecting. As these twists and turns came, so did feelings of rejection, abandonment, failure, fear, and shame. The fairy tale story I had always dreamed about wasn’t coming true, and I believed the lie that I was powerless to change the ending. The crushing weight of intense stress, anxiety, and emotions over what was going on in my life caused me to find rescue in the counterfeit arms of an eating disorder. However, it turned out to be the worst kind of cheater. Now, deeply entrenched, It didn’t rescue me but enslaved me, and I found myself fighting for my life. Despite seven years of various kinds of top-notch treatment, I couldn’t break free, and finally resigned myself to live the rest of my life ensnared. However, in my complete brokenness, hopelessness and desperation, God intervened and showed me the lies I believed about myself that kept me powerless and captive. That day in 2008 marked a turning point in my recovery and the eating disorder thoughts and urges to engage in behaviors slowly went away. Today, I still walk free of eating and body image issues, something I used to never think possible. Beloved, there is hope for your freedom too and from the depths of my heart, I pray that you would find it.

Hey, I'm Jilisa I'm so happy you're here As an experienced eating disorder coach who has gone through my own journey of recovery, I am uniquely positioned to help you regain control of your life and achieve lasting healing. My expertise, personal experience, and empathetic approach provide the support and understanding you need as you embark on your path to healing. My Story I never thought it could or would happen to me, either. I thought falling to the pressures of society, media, perfectionism, and insecurities was for the weak. That only happened to other people. Not me. Until it was me. For many years, it was me. I suffered from anorexia and an exercise addiction for the majority of my twenties. It stole some of what were supposed to be the best years of my life. Fortunately, I was able to fight back, and regain control of my life. Recovery has taught me so many things, but most of all, how grateful I am for life. A life full of zest, energy, and experiences. It has taught me how easily things can slip, and how desperately I want for others to experience this freedom that I so deeply cherish. I am dedicated to walking the journey of recovery with others who find themselves fighting with eating disorder behaviors and tendencies. I am here to tell you, freedom is possible, and it’s so, so beautiful. As a Registered Nurse, Gym Owner, and Eating Disorder Recovery Coach, I see health from a holistic perspective, and am able to approach each individual person with a wealth of knowledge from both personal and professional experience.

Michelle Gardner

My name is Michelle, I am a qualified eating disorder recovery coach, certified by the Carolyn Costin institute. I work with local clients in-person and via video conferencing worldwide. Serving and working as an Eating Disorder Recovery Coach is one of the most rewarding accomplishments of my life. HELPING my clients transform and heal their relationship with food and their body is what I am passionate about. My role as a recovery coach is to HELP clients adopt new healthy skills and tools to replace old disordered patterns. Working together, I would love to HELP you to move towards a life of more freedom, self-acceptance, authenticity and joy. Let's Get Personal My passion for nutrition and eating psychology was born out of my own challenges with food and poor body image. For 20 years after constant dieting and body hatred, I quietly battled Anorexia and Bulimia. My only official diagnosis was Bulimia, for I never met the DSM weight criteria for Anorexia; however, I swung back and forth between disorders. For all those years it seemed too great to overcome. Throughout this time, I felt broken. I felt totally disconnected from my body, powerless and alone. I imagined I might never feel whole again. My body and mind had betrayed me and left me in a never-ending food prison with no foreseeable way out. I realised that if I wanted to help myself and others in their journey with food, body image and health, I needed to find an approach that was all inclusive of who we are as eaters. I needed to go beyond the dieting rules we surround ourselves with. I needed to learn more, dive deeper, and be open to doing things differently and do to this I needed help. When I look at where I started and where I am now, the distance I have travelled is huge. I have learnt that healing and growth is possible and that not only can we overcome intense eating issues; we can use this transformation to help others. I have now freed myself from the all-consuming obsession with food and have found balance. Food no longer controls me. I had learnt over the years how to fully feel emotions and move forward positively. I had learnt to take self-responsibility for where I was at, always. I cannot wait to share what worked for me in creating a new way of looking at life’s challenges. I believe that everyone deserves to live a vibrant and healthy life.

Laura Shaw

Hi there, I'm Laura, and I'm so glad you found your way here. Let me share a bit about myself and why I'm passionate about what I do. My journey into coaching others through eating disorder recovery didn't start in a boardroom or a classroom. It began in the trenches of my own battles with disordered eating and an eating disorder. Growing up as a twin sister, comparison was second nature. While there were certainly joys in having a built-in best friend, the constant comparisons often left me feeling inadequate and struggling with low self-esteem and poor body image. In high school, I found my purpose in sports. I participated in cross-country running, cross-country skiing and track. These sports provided me with the outlet I needed to cope with the stresses of high school and helped me find an identity outside of being a twin. I fell in love with these sports and continued to excel in them. What started as a fun activity and something I loved quickly turned into a way for my disordered eating to control me. My relationship with movement became about needing to burn off what I was eating and control my size. It wasn't until I ventured off to university that the full weight of my struggles became apparent, leading to a diagnosis that changed everything. My own recovery journey was anything but linear. I stumbled, I fell, and I picked myself back up countless times. But through each setback, I found strength in knowing that there was more to life beyond my eating disorder. The turning point that threw me further into recovery came with a heartbreaking loss - the passing of my mother due to cancer. In the midst of grief, I found a renewed sense of purpose to delve even deeper into my recovery and to help others do the same. Recovery isn't a one-size-fits-all journey. It's messy, it's complex, and it's anything but easy. But I can tell you firsthand that it's worth it. Every stumble, every setback, every victory - they all contribute to the beautiful landscape of recovery. So whether you're just starting out on your recovery journey or navigating through the twists and turns, know that you're not alone. I'm here to walk alongside you, to offer support, guidance, and, most importantly, hope. Together, we can rewrite the narrative and discover the freedom that comes with embracing our true selves. Are you ready to take the first step towards your own journey of healing? Let's connect! Reach out today to schedule your free discovery call, and let's start rewriting your story together. With Hope, Laura
